help! - new moving advice

Postby mercutio » Mon Aug 02, 2004 12:43 pm

I looked around and may have missed it but here is a moving question that I dont think has been answered on the site.

I have seen "moving to Japan" and "moving in Japan" but now i have to figure out how to move *out* of Japan. I thought I was going to be able to do the same thing i did on the way here and just mail a few big boxes... coming this direction that cost less than $1000 total...but going the other way it looks like each box could cost $1000.

any suggestions for movin companies/methods?

Can't you do the same thing that Japanese kids would do when doing an exchange program? :?:

You might want to look into reserving a small part of a container on a container ship. A guy I know did it and swears by it. He said the price is entirely by volume; weight doesn't mean a thing. Of course, if you need your goods in a hurry then that might not be the best way.

Allied Pickfords - Japan

I know quite a few of the good folks who work in the Japanese division and if you want an intro, just drop me a line and I will set it up.

Your goodies may be a little on the small side for them (they normally ship whole housefuls for expats families on the corporate meal-ticket but they may be able to sort you out with what you need to know.

Gomi- Thanks I just emailed them. I figure my stuff will be too small for them to bother with since im not an expat on the company mealticket.

Taro- I am going to work on the mbag idea since most of what i ship is going to be books...the rest i was goign to load up in big monster bags and call them luggage.

Mercutio--

How are you getting rid of all your furniture and other sodai-gomi? That's another big expense, isn't it?

I used these guys: http://www.economovejapan.com/

They weren't too bad. From memory 3 X 1 cubic meter boxes (quite a lot of space) cost me about 120000 yen.

Kuro Neko Yamato has excellent service. They packed, shipped, and delivered 1 cubic meter of boxes from Japan to the USA for Y150,000. Loved the little white slippers and gloves they wear to keep your house clean!
