Let's Baka Bomb Aug. 15!

ONE-WAY TRIP: They fell to Earth aboard `cherry blossom' rockets
Aug 7, Asahi Shimbun News
...Come Aug. 15, the nation will again look back to the close of World War II, 59 years ago. Crowds of reporters and curiosity seekers will again gather at controversial Yasukuni Shrine-the nation's central shrine to the war dead-to see which politico will turn up and to snap photographs of the dwindling number of veterans who come every year to march in their old uniforms.
How many of them, however, will visit Ohka (Cherry Blossom) Park, set at the edge of the immense Sumitomo Metals foundry complex near Kashima, Ibaraki Prefecture, and a shrine in its own right?
There, a small granite altar stands in front of a crumbling air raid bunker, inside of which, beyond a wire fence, sits a replica of an MXY7 Ohka 11 rocket-bomb.
Cherry blossoms seem a ready-made symbol of the brief glory of youth, so it's no surprise that such a poetic name was given to this most desperate of weapons.
Looking like a spaceship, but actually little more than a torpedo with wings, the Ohka was meant to be slung under a bomber and dropped near its target. Only then would its pilot, a young man with a few weeks training, switch on its rocket and guide the craft to its end-a blossom of fire, mangled metal and flesh....more...

I don't see what's the big deal about a replica Oka. They have a real one in the war museum at Yasukuni Jinja, another at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in WashDC, there are quite a few others that were put on display as war trophies.

I just saw the Yasukuni Oka a couple of months ago, I thought it was in immaculate condition, the paint didn't seem faded, it looked sharp and crisp, although it's a bit hard to tell in this badly exposed and heavily processed digital photo. I'm not a big fan of aircraft hung from the ceiling on wires, but this presentation seemed well done to me, the white wires weren't obtrusive against a white aircraft and a white ceiling, and it was mounted very close to the balcony so you could almost reach out and touch it. Here's a pic:

Wow! That 10,000 times better condition than when I saw it years ago. Specially, the sakura on the side was not visible and that makes the "design." Now I've got to go on Aug. 15th aka SURRENDER DAY to see it, hee, hee.

there was a bbc docu the other day all about this, they saved the best bit till last about the oka designer apparently taking off a zero and doing a kamikaze run but actually running away, changing his name and keeping silent to his new family up until his last days..

it was a pretty comprehensive piece actually, i hope the beeb hurry up and get all their shows online as they keep saying they will.. must write to them, be great if you could cherry pick all the media you wanted and have it burnt to dvd for a reasonable price..

I went to visit on the last day of Yasukuni Matsuri, which I think was in late April just before Golden Week. They had a parade, it was kind of funny, I got grabbed by the Imperial Household Guard for standing in the wrong place, then suddenly Prince Mikasa came strolling through. Of course I was the only gaijin around, I guess they thought I was an assassin or something.

I had not visited Yasukini before, but everything seemed fairly newly refurbished. There was quite a bit of new construction near the museum, a new building was under construction. They have a newly restored Zero near the entrance, maybe they restored the Oka at the same time.
