Anyone know the deal. I went to work today, and low and behold they are puffing away in the teacher's room.. I thought in Hyogo Prefecture starting last April it was forbidden... Am I mistaken? I thought maybe I was.. so I ask.. And find out it is next year that smoking will be prohibited...

Anyone know? I think smoking should be banned from all schools.. You are an educator.. whether you realize it or not, you are setting an example. If kids see or smell smoke on you, that sets and example. Teachers work directly with children and their influences are far reaching.

How can a teacher tell a student not to smoke, when they themselves smoke.... Hypocrisy...

Plus the second hand smoke effects everyone in the room. Today I came home and coughed up phlegm... I don't know if I can keep doing that. I have an allergy to cigarette smoke.. I never go to restaurants that don't have a non-smoking section, I never go to bars (unless I am drunk, hehehe), and I don't have friends who smoke by choice.

I may contact the board of education and get their policy in writing concerning this matter.... unless some of you already know.

Can't disagree BB, but I tried the mentor/example argument with a few teachers and it seemed to be a whole new concept for them.

Maybe not a good idea to run screaming to the BoE just yet. Try talking to some friendly non-smoking teachers and you might be able to use people power to at least make the situation better in some way.

Not sure when this ban will hit Hyogo, but the 'no smoking on school grounds' rule has been creeping around the country for the last 1-2 years. Doesn't have too much effect though, other than cleaning up the air in the staff room. You'll probably find principals sneak out to the road in front of school for a quick puff, and others use the (non-ventilated) toilets.

it is a bad example to set,
however as a smoker, and an educator, id like to put forward the much maligned system in japan, where the parents expect the education system to discipline the students, whereas the educators, expect the parents to discipline the kids.
If i wanna smoke at work, there should be a designated smokeing area, out of the sight of the kids, for me to do so, however, it is not my responsibility to try to prevent others kids from smoking, when A: their parents probably smoke infront of them at home, and B: they can buy their own cigarettes from any vending machine whenever they want.

Going to the board of education and asking for something in writing is not they way to go. This is not the Japanese way. If you do this, you will find two things:

1) you will make no friends with this approach. Maybe people wont be outright mean to you, but they will not be especially friendly

2) nothing will change.

The Japanese way is the Japanese way. Japanese people dont appreciate foreigners coming into their country (and their schools) and saying "this is the way it should be". Also, the Japanese way is not to do anything to stand out. "The protruding nail gets hammered down" (or something like that) is a Japanese proverb. Anyone you try to complain to will try to get you to be quiet about it, before they will actually try to do anythign about it.

If you really dont like the smoke in the teachers lounge, then dont spend your time in the teachers lounge. There are probably numerous other places you can find in the school to pass your time.

I've heard smoking next year will be banned. I didn't plan to file a complaint or anything like that.. just simply ask one of the members of the BoE that I know personally about the rule.. and to verify if indeed next year will be the year it is banned..

I think smoking in the teacher's room around non-smokers is shit.. and I think smoking in a school should be banned, like bringing alcohol, guns, drugs, etc..

All it takes is one student to see you smoking.. and your credibility as an educator in terms of teaching non-smoking goes down the shidder.

That said, a smoking room, separate from any classroom, and in an isolated section of the school would be tolerable.

Well, you're in for a treat because teachers do drink at school in Japan. No not everyday, but they do sometime have nomikais at the schools.
