Manga moves on - now it's superflat

Japanese Artists Nara and Takano Have a Twisted Simplicty that Has Been Overlooked.

These days the Other is in. The last Western art fad - the Young British Artists - have one foot in last century and the other in the "has-bin." Globalist art, as the critics and curators are calling it, is the new thing. Basically globalist art calls for artists to no longer be just one nationality. You either have to be from some exotic place and study in the West, or be from the West and study in a non-Western country and become an expatriate.

Another artist who is very much in the "superflat" shadow is Aya Takano. She works in much the same vein as Nara, creating ultra-precious drawings and paintings of various small sizes - some so incredibly miniscule that they are measured in millimeters. You could say her figures, which wrestle, play, kiss and hang out, look more "human" than the typical style popular in Japanese art.

Ya know, it's funny they mention the "last" movement of British artists. I distinctly remember a woman artist from that movement that did paintings and drawings with that exact same style as in the example posted here. And she wasn't the only one working that way, they had their own little movement. The "superflats" obviously stole it from them.

If you ever want to devastate an artist, all you have to say is "it's been done before." Better yet if you can show them a prior example. Now I've got to go through a pile of old ArtForum magazines and see if I can dig up the name of the artists I saw that preceded the Superflats.

No, I'm serious, the contemporary works I saw were a dead ringer for Superflat works, not lame Picasso crap (I hate Picasso). I'll see if I can dig em up tomorrow when I can look through my bookshelf without waking everyone up (I have guests sleeping over).

If you want to know my personal tastes, I'm more into Dubuffet, Gerhard Richter, and strangely enough (considering my other aggressively modern favorites) Raoul Dufy.
