Apartment in TOKYO

Postby Mini_B » Fri Oct 01, 2004 2:37 am

I've seen discussions before about finding an apartment in Tokyo...I searched this site and got no results. Please ex-squeeze me if this has already been covered....

I want to browse online for reasonably priced apartments in Tokyo. I know that's an OXY-moron...so please let me explain. I'm looking for a rental company that will charge me a standard Japanese rate for an apartment...not like the ads that you can find in the English Newspapers with apartments renting for 300,000 JPY per month. Budget is around 100,000-120,000 and don't need a huge place. 2DK 1LDK. Get the picture??

Please post some urls. Japanese only is OK.

http://www.forrent.jp/

then, you navigate to the 23 ku, then you choose the train/subway line you want to be close to, then the features of your new house.

of course, it is all in Japanese, and there are things you need to know before you can search for a place. for example, the difference between "mansion" (concrete) and apaato (wood), and other such Japanese-only concepts.

Better have a Japanese friend help you the first time.

The site is free and links you to the real estate agent. If you find a good real estate agent, forget the web site and make them find you a place. for that, having a fax number where they can send you the spec sheets/maps.

for 100-120,000, you can have a very decent mansion in shibuya, if you are single or a young couple. if you have a kid, you will need to get a little bit further away from the Yamanote. if you don't care about living in a place made of wood in the 70's then you can find many 40 sqm 2DK in nice/hip neighborhoods.

then, of course, if you are a gaijin, some people just won't accept renting you a place...

This may not fit your needs but it might be a good fallback if you otherwise get stuck. I haven't used them myself, but their places look simple and straighforward. Most of the their stuff is in the 150,000+ range...look at the "business" selection (there is also a monthly utility charge around 18,000), but they do have some aroiund 100,000-120,000...And thats for a furnished aptartment with a fridge, oven, and washing machine.

I'm also kind of curious about this discrimination thing -

My 4 years in Kyushu are coming to an end and I will be looking for an apartment in Tokyo in the 100,000 range. Is it really that hard to find someone to rent to you over there? Here I have never had any problem. I'm a white guy who speaks Japanese by the way.

Thanks - found a nice apartment

Postby Mini_B » Mon Oct 04, 2004 5:49 am

Thanks for the feedback FG's. I found a great apartment - 2DK - 3 minutes walk from Ikebukuro Eki. It's around 50 sq meters and clean.

I found it through a friend who introduced my wife and I to a fudousan that he knows very well. No discriminating, very polite and even went down in price from 140,000 to 130,000. This apartment was the first one we saw.

We wanted to look around a bit though before pulling the trigger, so we decided to walk into a couple places to take a look at what was out there. I totally forgot how pissed off I get in these rental agencies. I went in with 2 Japanese and myself where we were told that we couldn't see most of the available apartments because the owners are in the 'old mentality' and don't rent to gaijin. I wanted to grab the guy by his fucking shirt, smash his head on the desk a couple time and throw him through the window. I didn't do that though...cause that's bad...but I wanted to. We left and went to the next place.

The second rental agency - The little fucker gave us the same crap... but did take us to one place which was a complete shithole that he and I both knew I would never rent. I wanted to push him down the steps and stomp on his face when we were leaving...but I didn't...cause that's bad.

So we decided to go with the non-racist friend of a friend's apartment that was hassle free. I swear if I ever have to go through that type of discrimination again...I might lose my temper and crush someone's skull.

Has anyone ever been sued for discrimination in Japan? Don't laugh, I'm serious. Physical pain is, of course, my preference...but I'd sue one of these bastards just to piss them off.

Peace,

This has been proposed...

 http://www.jclu.org/katsudou/bills/racial_discrimination/index_e.html

The Hamamatsu Jewelry store case is considered to be the precedent upon which any laws will be written.

http://www.migrationint.com.au/news/st_petersburg/nov_1999-15.asp

A Hamamatsu jewelry store owner was ordered by a Shizuoka District Court on October 12 to pay a Brazilian women 1.5 million yen after the store owner ordered her out of his story in June 1998 because she was a foreigner. The judge said," banning foreigners from a store has an element of treating them cruelly because of their differences and is not appropriate behavior." The judge said that the ejection violated the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination; Japan signed the Convention in December 1995. The store owner had placed signs in his store saying that foreigners were banned from the premises because he was trying to reduce theft. Hamamatsu has about 10,000 Brazilian Japanese among 548,000 residents.

Discrimination in Japan

Postby Mini_B » Tue Oct 05, 2004 5:34 am

Yeah...but that's too much reading. I'd rather stick to what I'm good at - violence.

I'm not one to make a big fuss. I can always go back to my motherland and deal with other types of crap. I guess living in Japan can give one a good idea of what it's like to be a turd. At least we're not enslaved. Could you imagine being black back in the day in the USA? (that rhymed!)

Or...we could do a little candid camera gig and make a joke out of it. Just a 5:33 AM without any sleep thought. Rob Pongi?? what do you say?

Thanks but no thanks

Postby Mini_B » Thu Oct 07, 2004 12:17 am

Thanks for the info on the guesthouse...but I'll pass. As I mentioned I've already located a nice apartment in Ikebukuro without the usual 'gaijin hassle'. I lived in a gaijin house once before and never again. This FG needs his privacy.
