Pay pal would be and was the first choice but was not possible.
As, I am not from AU the other option was also not possible.

I wonder why the UK has to be involved in transfers to AU from Japan?
Very strange indeed. Maybe it is the Euro Giro connection. as the form I was given at the PO had that on the back of it, sort of hidden away.

feel your pain

Postby james » Mon Dec 20, 2004 11:30 pm

i used to hate dealing with the post office to send money orders to canada. it's particularly painful for small amounts though i actually find postal money orders quite cheap and convenient for large amounts, as long as there's no hurry. my situation is different though - i'm usually sending money to a family member to be deposited in my accounts there (canada). can the guy you're dealing with not accept a postal money order instead of a wire transfer? is he in a rush? you'd only be looking at 1000 yen to send it but it could take 10-20 days..

i'm checking out this page now for you -

http://www.ozforex.com.au/immediatePayments.htm

not sure if they can help.

are you american or hold an american bank issued visa card? that might make it easier.. western union can issue a money order to oz online that you pay with your credit card and the charge for small amounts is $15.

if neither of the above is feasible, sounds like your best bet for the time being would be to find an australian friend who could help you out by having someone back home mail a cheque or doing a local bank transfer to the guy and you could just pay him/her here in cash and/or alcohol.

y'know.. this gives me an idea..

Damn, that's a pain in the arse. I suppose something like a travelers check was not an option either. What about Western Union? they are in Japan, and at least are popular with Aussies sending money to family here in Japan...

The last time I sent money to the US by denchi soken, it was about 1900 en plus 1 en on the rate. But at 102.7 en/$ it was a steal. But the number of signatures and hankos that were applied to this application were mindbogling. Not to mention that they couldn't process the application at one time, they made me come back twice to do it.

Anyway, FWIW there is about nothing I can think of in the AU$50 price range that I would put up with so much hassle for. I hope it was worth in in the end..

Thanks for the info...
I allready bit th bullet and did the transfer this morning.
I have only Japanese creditcards and the small place I bought from does not even handle them.
They told me at the post office that they can only issue a hard copy of an International money order in US Dollars and they can not be used outside the US.
For the life of me,I can't figure out why the Brits get to cream off money from transfers to AU from Japan. Must be the old colony mentality still in the works.

Yeah, I was thinking that myself but with the Xmas postal madness going on I decided against that.

u.s. money orders

Postby james » Tue Dec 21, 2004 11:25 am

i can't for the life of me, understand why the post office here won't let people send the pink u.s. money orders to countries outside the u.s. i'm pretty sure they're universally accepted in canada and almost everywhere else. my guess is it'd be a lot easier and cheaper to mail a u.s. money order for $40 u.s. to australia than dealing with all the b.s. for a wire transfer.

Seems like the guy at the post office was right about the US being the only place you can get money orders for and send them yourself.
Strange indeed.

Taken from PO PDF file
http://www.japanpost.jp/top/disclosure/e2004/pdf/04.pdf
The bottom line is don't buy anything from anyone who does not accept paypal or a credit card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The post office accepts the remittance amount and handling charges from the customer at the counter. The remittance amount will be paid to payee in exchange for the postal money order
certificate in the country of payee. In case of remittance to the United States of America, it is also possible for the customer him or herself to send the postal money order certificate issued by the post office to the payee.

Tried the calculation and this is how it came out on their site.
Not bad considering.

Amount in Yen: 6,069
Commission (Yen): 2,000
Transfer in Yen: 4,069
GoLloyds TTS Rate: 81.38
Remittance Amount: AUD 50
