astronauts who get to contend for shuttle tend to be small, with low-weight have litttle body fat

Why because it cost u $25,000 per kilogram to get into space

Is Bush still thinking of sending a shuttle to Mars ?

Not only that, but smaller people can sustain higher G's for longer periods of time, simple because of the smaller distance from the heart to the brain. That's why fighter pilots are a short bunch for the most part :P

I think that size is more a space issue in the shuttle and space missions. That a pilot must be short was a much touted theory for many years, but the reason for most of the short pilot stories was that when cockpits became almost capsulized, the maximum sitting posture a pilot could have was 42 inches. The reason was simply up to the early jets you had to sit on your parachute and any taller than 42 you did not fit in the cockpit. You were actually measured during your induction physical (been there, done that and got the Tshirt) That went out after Korea and you see many gun fighter type pilots now over six feet. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Dick Meyers is 6' 3" and he drove F4's in Vietnam.

but as soon as it was back it stared falling apart,
bit of debris fell off it, and lumps of foam crumbled away

events were captured in onboard video and the agency says it now needs to consider their significance.
In one case, a heatshield tile seems to have been affected on the underside of the shuttle.

NASA is grounding its shuttle fleet after cameras showed foam insulation appeared to break off the shuttle Discovery during its launch into space
but a Shuttle is still stuck up in Space

Soichi Noguchi , the American astronauts and an Aussie
may have to remain in Space forever while NASA brass try to figure out how not to make a Shuttle Explode
