Drink that looks like beer getting popular with kids
2005-08-05 00:11 (New York)
SAGA, Japan, Aug. 5
Kyodo
''Kidsbeer,'' a nonalcoholic brew aimed at children, is catching on with young drinkers and is posting monthly shipments of 75,000 bottles, according to its maker Tomomasu Co. The beverage, which uses the Latin American plant guarana as an ingredient, sells for around 380 yen per a 330-milliliter bottle, which is colored brown to make the drink look even more beer like, the company said. The drink originated from a Coca-Cola-like beverage that used to be sold at the Shitamachi-ya restaurant in Fukuoka, run by 39-year-old Yuichi Asaba. Asaba renamed the sweet carbonated drink ''Kidsbeer'' from ''Guarana,'' a move that made it an instant hit. Asaba outsourced its manufacturing to Tomomasu, a beverage maker based in Ogi, Saga Prefecture.

Tomomasu tinkered with the drink by decreasing its sweetness and increasing its frothiness, the company said. It began shipping the transformed drink in late 2003. The initial shipment was only 200 bottles per month. But the beverage was soon adopted by other restaurants and even by department stores, which began offering it as a gift package. Asaba said kids and other people ''can raise a glass with this, even if they cannot drink any liquor.'' And kids are happy that the drink produces a lot of fizz and froth. Satoshi Tomoda, president of the beverage maker, said, ''Children copy and mimic adults.''

''If you get this drink ready on such occasions as events and celebrations attended by kids, it would make the occasions even more entertaining.'' The Kidsbeer label captures a nostalgic mood as it was modeled after classic beer labels. ''Even kids cannot stand life unless they have a drink,'' reads the advertising catchphrase for Kidsbeer. Damn, beer is less harmful than legal-crack guarana.*

*Symptoms can include: nausea, diarrhoea, light-headedness, indigestion, irregular heartbeat and respiration, jitteriness and frequent urination. In addition, acute symptoms of withdrawal occur during the first 20-48 hours, but can persist for several days. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, nervousness, reduced alertness and depressed mood. Dependence may develop if it is taken in order to abate these symptoms. Stroke is possible in overweight users of guarana.

Looks like Tomomasu is missing out/ignoring much of the brand value of guarana

(a reprint of a WSJ piece)

Guarana's potent reputation makes consumers drink it up
MAUES, Brazil -- According to Amazon jungle legend, the first guarana-berry bush sprouted on the spot where a lightning bolt struck a pair of star-crossed lovers from rival Indian tribes.

This rain-forest Romeo and Juliet tale spawned the reputation for explosive natural energy and torrid eroticism that has helped guarana attain a peculiar dual distinction: It is both Brazil's favorite national soft-drink flavor and its most widely used aphrodisiac.

Whether consumed as a powdered additive or a soft drink that tastes a little like bubble gum, guarana (pronounced guarah-NAH) packs a bristling caffeine punch. But scientists say there is no evidence that the crimson Amazon fruit lifts the libido.

Soft-drink lovers in the sensual land of Carnaval aren't terribly interested in laboratory research, however. Guarana accounts for more than one-quarter of Brazilian carbonated-beverage sales. One Brazilian president used to have his favorite regional guarana shipped in bulk 800 miles to the national palace. Not content with merely drinking guarana, another devotee made a toothpaste from it.

But these days, no one in the world's third-largest soft-drink market (after the U.S. and Mexico) seems as guarana-obsessed as mighty Coca-Cola Co. Even for a corporation with Coke's vast international experience, competing against a purported sexual stimulant is a tall order.

A boom in low-priced soft drinks, mostly guaranas, has been cutting deeply into the Brazilian market share of Coke's flagship cola, which also contains caffeine. (The market share of Coke beverages in Brazil has fallen to 46 percent from 58 percent in 1993.) While Coke has countered with two guarana brands of its own, patriotic Brazilian consumers have been less than rapturous about gringo guaranas. Coke's fiercest Brazilian rival, a guarana bottler called Cia. Antarctica, which controls one-quarter of the market for the Amazon elixir, has been ridiculing the soft-drink giant in TV ads that, in effect, accuse Coke of guarana envy. Now Antarctica says it's merging with Brazil's No. 2 guarana maker, a giant beverage firm called Cia. Cervejaria Brahma SA, to form a juggernaut that will give Coke even bigger headaches.

Coke officials dismiss the notion that Brazilian guarana brands have somehow seduced local soft-drink consumers.

Flavor and price matter to Brazilian consumers, they say, not Amazonian sexual myths. "We've done a lot of consumer research," says Fernando Mazzarolo, Coke's marketing director in Brazil. Seeking to win the next round of the guarana wars, Coke is discounting some products and more energetically promoting its premium guarana brand, Kuat, which is packaged in a colorful rain-forest motif.

But others say that Brazilians' craving for good guarana is as much about basic human instincts as price points and packaging. "Every Brazilian knows that guarana is a stimulant and that means it stimulates everything," says Eduardo Lago, a Coke bottler in the northeastern city of Sao Luis who also produces a popular regional brand (independently of Coca-Cola) of the Brazilian beverage, Guarana Jesus.

US soft drink guarana devotees may remember Pepsi's short lived Josta soda or the still available Bawls (which is marketed as a computer gaming otaku/haxor elite drink...the first time I saw it, it was being sold in Comp USA by the mini case)

there are plenty of redbull-clone energy drinks out there with guarana in it.

In Ireland, they used to sell 'shandy' in cans until the early 90s.
It had something like .5% alcohol content.
Perfect for weening the kids onto the harder stuff
