Ninemsn: Twin pandas born in Japan, one survives
A giant panda at a zoo in western Japan has given birth to twins and one has survived, a zoo official says. Ten-year-old Mei Mei gave birth to a 180-gram female just before midnight on Tuesday, said Adventure World spokesman Tadashi Ishikawa. A baby boy was born prematurely within hours but died later the next day, he said. Pandas are notoriously difficult to breed in captivity. Females are in heat for only a few days a year - usually between March and May - and male pandas often fail to respond. But with the new baby girl, the zoo in western Wakayama prefecture (state) has successfully bred its fourth panda.
