The protest against Japan's resumption of whaling (see: The Wailing of Whales Begins.....) turned violent today when a suicide bomber was arrested in South Africa.


A policeman attempts to defuse a bomb strapped to the protester.

Identified as a Southern Right Whale, the suicide bomber was intercepted and arrested at Mnandi Beach near Cape Town. Police then attempted to defuse the device to take the protester away for questioning, however, they were unsuccessful and the device detonated. Police stated that no (more) charges would be laid

'Whale riders' reveal evolution

Scientists have examined the genes of "whale lice" to track whale evolution.
The small parasitic crustaceans were taken off Right Whales, which have been driven to the brink of extinction in some waters by commercial hunting.
The genetics of the lice reveal their hosts split into three species 5-6 million years ago, and these were all equally abundant before whaling began
