A North Carolina company thinks it's found a way to reverse its declining fortunes. It's hoping to sell socks made of corn in Japan. The socks disintegrate when buried in a compost heap. For years, Twin City Knitting made money producing athletic socks...But in recent years, the company has been laying off workers and buying cheaper socks from China. Now, Twin City and three other mills hope a sock woven from corn starch fiber will turn things around. The company president and part-owner flies to Japan next week to make the pitch. If successful, Francis Davis says he thinks he could hire at least ten more workers to specialize in corn-sock production.
