Shogi Dreams

Spot the Gameboy

35 year-old popular amateur shogi Champion Shoji Segawa is pictured here playing 17-year old third dan Sato at Shinjuku's Kinokuniya Hall. Segawa is attempting to turn professional by passing the Japan Shogi Association's examination. In an unprecedented move, the association has attempted to capitalize on Segawa's popularity by throwing the examination games open to a paying public and marketing the event as the "Salaryman's Dream". Sadly, Segawa lost this opener when Sato launched a come-from-behind endgame attack. A kind of sayonara checkmate. Segawa needs to win three of the 6 match series to gain pro status

Sadly no. There are aften a lot of outdoor shogi games close to Shimbashi station at the weekends and I tried a few games. I couldn't get the hang of pieces returning to the board after being captured,

The boy done good...

Kyodo via Japan Today: Amateur becomes pro shogi player; 1st such case in 61 years
...Shoji Segawa, passed a special test arranged for him to qualify as a professional shogi player Sunday, making him the first person in 61 years to become a pro without belonging to a closed shogi association group...Segawa, a former amateur shogi champion, beat professional Hideyuki Takano, scoring three wins and two losses on the test through which he was required to win at least three games out of six matches to become a pro.
