Revolution Is Brewing at N. Korean Schools in Japan

Postby cstaylor » Mon Oct 13, 2003 5:56 pm

From the Washington Post
Generations of these ethnic Koreans have pledged allegiance to the North's Communist government, their cash remittances back home a critical source of hard currency for the isolated nation.

But a revolution is brewing at First Chosen and the other North Korean schools in Japan.

Check out the bottom pic. I'd first seen it in a recent New Yorker (weekly mag) article. Text (& commentary) aside, I've since been hard put to forget it whenever I hear mention of the North.

I'm sorry but I gonna have to start being more "Japanese" towards the Chosen Schools. I used to have a lot of sympathy for the poor girls wearing the Korean clown costumes on the trains going to school. But damn, if they're gonna be saluting Lil' Kim who is shooting missles at us well ....

As the morning bell tolls at First Chosen Grammar School on the outskirts of this sprawling capital, students rush to class under a mural urging them to cram for the glory of North Korea. At recess they march to blaring North Korean hymns. Their history lessons extol the virtues of Kim Il Sung

At a run-down Tokyo junior school, portraits of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il cast a watchful gaze over the pupils. But after the bell, the kids share frank opinions about the so-called Dear Leader.

"Perhaps this is a little rude, but he's kind of fat," second grader Lee Miyong Hee says of the pudgy, bouffant-haired Kim.

Second Chosen Elementary is one of some 120 schools in Japan funded by Kim's regime for emigre Korean families who live in Asia's richest capitalist society yet see the communist "workers' paradise" as their homeland.

For decades, the schools indoctrinated the children in the glories of North Korea, the evils of Japanese imperialism and the revolutionary exploits of national founder Kim Il Sung, the "Beloved Father Marshal."

But enrollment has fallen to 12,000 from 40,000 in the 1970s, parents are disenchanted, and the dream of one day returning to Chosen, as Korea is historically known, is dying. So the schools are phasing out the Kim-worship and dipping a toe in the Japanese mainstream.

These schools are such a bizzarre phenomenon.

I once had an eikaiwa student who went to one in Aichi. She went on a field trip to Pyongyang and brought me back a cool souvenir (stationary from her hotel).

Does anyone know if they hire gaijin ALT's?

That's surprising. I thought you had hauled enough in by gunny sack to fill most of your positions for some time.

However, if Uriabuji will send one of the his cheerleading squad from the Bijougundan, over to give me "close, on-site guidance" like they give him, I might be interested in going over and making (the key word here is Tsukuru) some more believers for his paradise of the North. On the second thought, tell him to send me two cause I'm a hard sell.
