From the diary of Charles Blauvelt, visiting Tokyo between August 6 and September 10, 1923:
September 1st
At Imperial Hotel Tokyo. Was talking in my room #310 on the third floor with Mr. Okamoto and Mr. Takaki of O.+Co. Lt. here at about 11:55 a.m. when we felt a terrible Earthquake...The fire burned all night and food could not be had anywhere...I thought our fate was the same as those many poor refugees I had seen and pitied...A little later came word that there were lots of Koreans in the neighborhood setting buildings afire with kerosene and dynamite. This gave us all a new scare...more...
