ELVER POACHERS WILL BE NETTED
Poachers are being warned to stay away from the River Severn as the annual elver season begins to get under way....
The number of elvers migrating up the Severn from their breeding grounds more than 2,000 miles away in the Sargasso Sea has declined sharply in recent years. Most are now exported to Japan, the Far East and Europe either to eat as a delicacy or to be farmed.
Gone are the days when elvers were plentiful and local pubs in the area organised elver eating contests to see who could get through a pint of the tiny creatures in the shortest time.
"See who could get through a pint of elvers": Is this worthy of Monty Python or what?
