Asahi: JR East 're-opens' the window on way things used to be
Calling it a "renovation of unprecedented scale," JR East has decided to switch from its slick, wide-view windows, which cannot be opened, to good old-fashioned retractable windows that allow natural ventilation. The company plans to revamp about 800 of its 209-series trains on major commuter lines, like the Keihin Tohoku Line that connects Tokyo and two neighboring prefectures..."There are merits to both fixed windows and retractable ones," said a JR East official.
