Sexy British Accents Woo Japan

Crisscross: British English sounds sexiest for Japanese
Which English accent do Japanese find the sexiest? In a poll of over 2,000 Japanese people conducted by eigoTown.com last month, the answer was clear: British English. In a boost for Union Jack wavers across the world, the respondents overwhelmingly chose British English with 50% in favor of the set of accents comprising "British English." Prime Minister Tony Blair and Hugh Grant were considered prime examples of sexy voices, with the popularity of Harry Potter lending a hand as well. EigoTown.com, a portal site for learners of English, conducted the poll on its eigoTown website, called "Which English do you think has the sexiest accent?" and collected a total of 2,350 ballots. First place was British English (50%), followed by American English (16%), Irish English (13%), Canadian English (12%), Australian English (5%) and New Zealand English (4%).

Ireland (at least one for every county [32] ;)) and Britain have such a huge volume of accents for such small landmasses. Comparitively, America seems to have quite few for such a huge country (as in youll get several adjacent states between which the accent dosent seem to vary much).

Are there many accents/dialects within Canada, Oz, and NZ?

Did they really simply ask people which accent is sexier? I think they should have actually played audio clips. Because I remember most Japanese people not being able to actually tell the difference between a British or American accent (for example) so I don't know what basis they'd have for replying to a simple question.

It was a question on the eigotown website - click the box.
Most Japanese can't tell the difference between an Aussie, a West Virginian, and a Liverpoolean.

Australia's got pretty much the same accent country wide.
I guess you could say there's a city accent and a country accent though
I broke a mirror this morning, which means I should be getting 7 years of bad luck - but my lawyer says he can get me 5.

Yes I agree, with the observation of the main noticeable affection being, the hotter the climate the slower the speech patterns, normaly.

I grew up in Victoria, Coldish, and now live in Tropical North Queensland, hottish, and the way people speak is very similar with the speed being the main point of change.
I am staying out of city/country, Uni educated/non Uni educated calls though, Too subjective IMO.

New Zealanders accents really depend on race and location. Most Europeans sound the same except those from the southernmost district who sound weird. Maori and Pacific Islanders have an accent all of their own, as do white people who live in the areas where Maori and Pacific islanders are the majority.

As for Aussies i notice i huge difference between regions. For example someone from SA has a much stronger accent than someone from NSW.

The funny thing is that the percentage of Japanese who can understand English, I mean really understand it enough to know what a regional accent implies, is 0%.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

I will woo everyone with my awful awful Chicago accent.

"I'm from ChicAHgo and I own a bAHx and my parents are from WiscAHnsin."

I thought other people were weird until I left the country and the other foreigners started making fun of *my* accent. Bastards.
Why do the Japanese always have to have a favorite saying?

Have you ever heard someone from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania? They have a very unique accent. It makes New Jersey sound quaint.

I'm from downstate, but still speak with the Chicago Zuzuben! Strangely, Taro doesn't, he might be an alien try to pass off as from the North shore! That also goes for Spector, but he's not as alien as Taro! hehe

That accent will go away if you move to a warmer climate and allow a couple years for your sinuses to thaw out.
