He's big in Japan

"It was so different. And they were so kind to me, as a white foreigner. And then, you're so popular for no reason, while at home you're just another whitey. My host family was so good to me, they inspired me to learn the language," he says.

When Malito travels back to Japan, he plans to reunite with his girlfriend and, of course, enter more singing competitions.

As I always tell a wannabe FG, "Eight weeks of singing lessons will get you further in Japan than eight weeks of Japanese lessons." :)

Arrrrrg Tina! Now all I can think of is the song "BIG in JAPAN"
I got the sizzle, but not the steak / I got the boat, but not the lake / I got the sheets, but not the bed / I got the jam, but not the bread / But, hey I'm big in Japan, I'm big in Japan/ I'm big in Japan, I'm big in Japan.

--"BIG in JAPAN", my internal theme music by Tom Waits, in 'Mule Variations' CD (1999)

TONIKAKU Getting back to Tina's question about NHK's "the childrens' song Ai no unchi .. The best I can say is to follow the program links here on NHK schedule site http://www3.nhk.or.jp/hensei/ch1/20030916/frame_05-29.html
Then postal mail (or call) the ASSISTENT producer for the lyrics or CD. (Note the "director" or 'producer" never answers the mail or the phone.

Buffalo LB Takeo Spikes
FOXSports.com / Sep. 19, 2003 5:38 a.m.

...Q: What's the story behind your unusual first name?

SPIKES: It's a Japanese name that means "great warrior." It comes from the prime minister of Japan back around 1976. My mother wanted to name me something special and he was on TV all the time so she did a little research before she left the hospital and she said, "This is my warrior."

Q: Are you big in Japan, then?

SPIKES: I do get a lot of Japanese fan mail. Most of it is them telling me what my name means and that they want an autograph, personalized to so-and-so.

Q: So no hordes of Japanese media following you around like Ichiro and Hideki Matsui?

SPIKES: I think you've got be born and bred Japanese to get that.

Just wait 'til next month. That's when the first hearing is supposed to be. You'll be up to your armpits in Kobe stories.
