Nuked Natto Deemed Overcompensated

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Kyodo Via Yahoo: Court rules 'natto' sales drop linked to Ibaraki nuclear accident
The Tokyo District Court ruled Wednesday that a "natto" fermented soybeans maker in Ibaraki Prefecture lost some 180 million yen because its sales were hit by the 1999 fatal radiation leakage at a nuclear fuel processing plant in Tokaimura in the prefecture. "The natto factory is located within 10 kilometers of the accident site, and it is understandable that consumers became reluctant to buy its products," Presiding Judge Akio Doi said. "It can be said that there was a causal link between the decline in their sales and the accident." Doi, however, rejected the maker's demand that JCO Co., the operator of the plant, pay some 1.6 billion yen in compensation, as it had already received some 210 million yen in the form of accident benefit from JCO. He ordered the "natto" maker to return the 30 million yen difference.
