Japanese Cow Leads Police on Wild Chase

4 June 2006

A cow being delivered to a Japanese slaughterhouse tried to bolt to freedom Sunday, leading nearly two dozen police on a 3.7-mile car chase through town and sending one man to the hospital unconscious.

Security camera footage of the wild escape, aired by public broadcaster NHK, showed the frenzied 1,606-pound animal zigzagging across a parking lot and then darting down a street, hotly pursued by a stream of patrol cars.

"The cow was being delivered to the slaughterhouse, and it was startled by a loud sound and just ran off," said Masashi Kitabayashi, a police official in the central town of Yakkaichi, where the incident took place.

The 3-year-old cow eventually crashed headfirst into a metal fence, fell down and died . . . more

Maybe the "loud sound" was the nail gun being fired into the head of the cow in front of it.

That might explain the escape.

I saw this footage last night on the news]Oregon Man Survives 12 Nails to the Head

An Oregon man who went to a hospital complaining of a headache was found to have 12 nails embedded in his skull from a suicide attempt with a nail gun, doctors say.

Surgeons removed the nails with needle-nosed pliers and a drill, and the man survived with no serious lasting effects..

Mad Cow attempts to export itself to U.S. ??

Postby DrP » Mon Jun 05, 2006 8:25 pm

Or maybe another explanation? There were more reported cases of mad cow disease in Japan last year than the U.S. by a factor of at least 5:1 !! So -- is the gyu-sashimi you are eating really that safe???

Arrff!

That's why they use bolt guns...

From University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine:
Properly applied, euthanasia by either gunshot or penetrating captive bolt, causes less fear and anxiety and induces a more rapid, painless, and humane death than can be achieved by most other methods. However, both methods may involve human risk, and therefore, require skill and experience. Neither method should be attempted by untrained or inexperienced persons...

Penetrating captive bolt followed by immediate exsanguination (bleeding out) is the preferred method for euthanasia of cattle in abattoirs (slaughter facilities).

I see that Hokkaido, home of the dairy industry has a new character called "Boltman" (ボ]this report (Japanese). The figures below are nothing to do with Lightning Bolt.
