Chill With a Jellyfish, Rent a Pup: Japanese Pay Big for Stress Relief
Washington Post, Monday, June 5, 2006; Page A01
ENOSHIMA, Japan --
As dusk draped this seaside town in darkness, Ikiko and Kuniyo Hirutani prepared themselves for the unknown. Tonight, they would sleep with the fishes, and both had come prepared -- with sleeping bags and pillows.
The sisters were there with 30 other stressed-out women, ages 28 to 57, seeking inner peace through communion with marine life. For about $120 each, they joined in Enoshima Aquarium's overnight relaxation program -- including a 45-minute session in which the women massaged their arms and legs in a room lit mostly by ghostly, biofluorescent jellyfish swaying gracefully to New Age music.
Before midnight, the sisters tucked themselves inside sleeping bags splayed in front of a vast aquarium wall. They gazed for hours as soothing sea creatures of every size and color glided through the cool blue. ...more...

I like communion with marine life, at my local sushi-ya. It's a lot cheaper than $120 per person.

The background din of the aeration pumps and water filtering of the Enoshima Aquarium would seem to me rather un-restfull.:(

Charles, I can tell you haven't been in a kokyu sushiya in Tokyo for a while ( not the 100yen slam bangers)!

You are lucky to get off for just $120 a pop these days!

Sushi is not a meal for gourmands.

I was at a pricey Ginza sushiya fairly recently (well, almost exactly 2 years ago). The tab for 2 people was around 15000Y, and we ate a lot. And that included sake too.

My favorite sushi experience was a long time ago, I used to walk through the Hakodate dockside market on my way to school every morning. I stopped to watch a guy preparing fresh uni, he was taking submerged baskets of live uni out of the ocean, they were tied to the side of a fishing boat. He would crack the uni open, wrap them in nori and rice, and lay them out for sale on his stand. I gaped in astonishment at seeing uni that was about 30 seconds from the ocean. The vendor tried to get me to buy one, I said I'd just eaten breakfast and wasn't hungry, but he said there's always room for uni so fresh. I decided he was right, so I bought one for about 150Y. It was delicious. It was HUGE, a whole uni in one serving, I usually see that amount of uni served in 6 to 8 pieces.

15000 yen for two people is not a "pricey" sushiya. Sounds more like McSushi to me.

Typical chucky reply... 15k for 2 with booze? Hell that's my bar tab for 2 (with maybe some cheap munchies included)... and I don't even drink much.. let alone in ginza...

.. and it wasn't any cheaper 2 years ago either.

Hell, you must be drinking on the budget tour, I can't get by for my own tab on that, but then again, I can't make the "... and I don't even drink much.. " claim either!

Well I wasn't even talking about ginza for that tab... surely you could get by with a 7k bar tab at an izakaya or gajin bar??? Or are you just that much of a slush? :-P
