Japan blasts longest land tunnel

More public money well spent.....

Japan blasts longest land tunnel

The last metre of bedrock was blasted away on Sunday
Construction engineers in Japan have broken through to make the world's longest land tunnel, as part of an extension to a high-speed rail network.
The tunnel, under a mountain in the north, is 26.5 km (16.5 miles) long.

The tunnel is unlikely to hold the record for long as two longer tunnels are due for completion in Spain and Switzerland over the next two years.

Critics say the tunnel, which costs more than $600m (£313m), will not be financially viable.

The northern regions around the new link are only lightly populated.

The BBC's Jonathan Head in Tokyo says Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has made curbing the country's addiction to concrete one of his central policy objectives.

But government borrowing has actually increased over the past four years - partly because tax revenues have been falling as the workforce shrinks and partly as a result of the back-log of high-cost infrastructure projects approved many years before.

Long Tunnel/ Shinkansen To Aomori City

The 16.4 mile Hakkoda Tunnel will become part of a new bullet train line under construction to link Tokyo with the northern city of Aomori about 360 miles to the north. The tunnel burrows under Mount Hakkoda in Aomori prefecture.
That's great. Aomori has been long overdue for a direct shinkansen line to Tokyo. I love Japanese trains!

Mount Hakkoda is an amazing place. To build a tunnel under it is an impressive architectural feat. It's easy to forget how many countries couldn't even come close to pulling something like that off.

About 100 years ago over 200 soldiers froze to death there during a winter training exercise to prepare for war with Russia. A lot of Japanese believe that the soldiers who died there don't know they're dead and, now ghosts, are still training for the war.

Now it's an awesome ski resort. It just has one tram and it's totally ungroomed and wild. Even today the mountain takes the life of a lost skier or two every couple of years or so. The trees there get completely covered in snow and look like spooky white monsters.

A total of 240 pieces of railway track to be laid on the Hokkaido Shinkansen Line between Aomori and Hakodate were unloaded from a freighter at a port here Monday morning.
