[FLOATL]Image[/FLOATL]Report: Japan to Get U.S. PAC-3 Missiles

The United States plans to deploy Patriot Advanced Capability 3 missiles in southern Japan by the end of the year, a local newspaper reported Monday. The PAC-3 is designed to intercept and destroy incoming missiles and aircraft.

The report comes as the U.S. and Japan are deeply concerned about signs North Korea may be preparing for an imminent test-launch of a Taepodong-2 ballistic missile.

The U.S. government notified Japan earlier this month that it will deploy PAC-3 missiles at its Kadena Air Base or its ammunition storage area on the southern island of Okinawa, Japan's largest newspaper, Yomiuri Shimbun, reported.

The U.S. military also plans to deploy an additional 500-600 American troops to Okinawa, along with an expected three to four PAC-3 missiles batteries, Yomiuri said, quoting unidentified sources......more...

Hope they've improved a bit from the PAC-1s

They can stop missiles, but can they stop warheads deployed from ICBMs?

Study: N. Korea Lifts Nuke Arsenal
http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/06/26/korea.nuclear.reut/index.html
During U.S. President George W. Bush's administration, North Korea has gone from having enough plutonium for one or two nuclear weapons to having enough for as many as 13, a study released on Monday said.

It concluded that the reclusive communist state, whose threat to test a long-range ballistic missile has spread concern in Washington and in Asia, could have more than 17 such weapons by the time Bush leaves office in early 2009..

That's what I think he means, MIRVs. The idea is supposed to be that you pop the missle before it has a chance to deploy its warheads.

Looks good on paper from a bunker! Say haven't we been here before?
