Reuters: Yahoo Japan to take 40% stake in SMFG online bank
Yahoo Japan Corp will spend 25.8 billion yen for a 40 percent stake in Japan Net Bank, an online unit of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group in September, the companies said on Thursday. Their agreement to form an Internet banking partnership was first unveiled in March as a rough scheme. Under the finalised deal, Yahoo will invest directly in Japan Net Bank, instead of in a new holding company for the online banking unit as earlier planned. SMFG's core commercial banking unit will also spend 8.7 billion yen to buy additional new shares in Japan Net Bank. After the transaction, scheduled for Sept. 29, Yahoo and SMFG's banking unit will each own 40 percent...Japan Net Bank competes with larger Internet-based lenders such as Sony Bank and Seven Bank, a unit of 7-Eleven convenience store operator Seven & I Holdings Co.
