Yomiuri: Health insurance cards will feature optional donor section
In an effort to increase the number of organ donors, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry has decided to include a section on insurance cards issued by a government-managed health insurance program in which people can state whether they are willing to donate organs for transplant. The scheme will be implemented from January 2007. The names of transplantable organs such as the heart, lungs and liver will be printed on the reverse side of the card, and people can indicate which organs they are willing to donate in the event of brain death or cardiac arrest.
