Kirin Brewery Co. said its mainstay Ichiban Shibori beer will become the first Japanese beer brand to be produced in Russia in September. Kirin's European subsidiary will commission a Russian brewery through a local liquor distributor to produce the beer, which has so far been exported to Russia from Britain. Russia is the fifth country outside Japan to produce Kirin beer, following the United States, Britain, China and Australia. The Russian beer market has tripled in the past decade to become the world's fourth largest.

I have some Canadian friends and the topic of Canadian beer keeps coming up. After Molson, Labatt's and Sleeman, we couldn't come up with other "genuine" Canadian beers. I knew of Moosehead. I haven't heard of Kokanee and Big Rock.

Any other true Canadian beers that can be obtained south of the border? I like to think that there is at least one Canadian beer that is brewed with water from a clear, Canadian mountain stream. Any Canadian FG out there that knows of a beer like that?

Big Rock is brewed with fine mountain water in the shadow of the Rockies, and Kokanee comes from glacier water just the other side of the Rockies. These are two of Western Canada's finest. Both started out as local brews, and took off as popularity and distribution increased. Moosehead comes from New Brunswick in the Maritimes, and is also fully Canadian AFAIK.

It appears that Canada's oldest independent brewer (the makers of Moosehead) also have another fine product, called Alpine Lager. Many of Canada's other independents (Carling O'Keefe, for example) were bought out by the big brewers, who in turn sold out themselves...

There are a few other independents out there, such as Pacific Western Brewing Co., Okanagan Spring Brewery, and some fine brewpubs.

Big Rock is my personal fav. The Grasshopper Wheat Ale is perfect for summer...

IIRC, Pacific Western was making some sort of cheap pils for the Japanese market, and it was sold at the Jusco chain of supermarkets until at least last autumn. It went for like 100 yen a can...and tasted like it too

Spoken like a true west coaster. Sleemans is more popular in the eastern Canadian market and owns a number of the Micro Breweries such as Upper Canada and Unibroue of Quebec which specialises in Belgian style ales (which I really recommand and can be found in Japan). So this may be good news.

Having just return from summer vacation I can confirm that Upper Canada Ale gives you the kind of beer farts that clear out large sections of the plane giving you more leg room.

I wouldn't call east o' the Rockies exactly "West Coast", but it is out West. As a famous premier once said no to, "Eastern creeps n' bums"
