Kerala:Tainted dumplings cost execs a bundle
A Japanese court has ordered two former fast food executives to pay more than $100 million for selling meat dumplings containing an illegal preservative. The amount of compensation ordered is the second highest in a suit brought by a shareholder in Japan, according to the defense. The Osaka District Court ruled that former Duskin Co. executives Shuichi Shibahara and Seisuke Sugano continued to sell the meat dumplings to Mister Donut outlets, knowing that the use of the illegal preservative violated the Food Sanitation Law and would eventually damage public trust in the company, Asahi Shimbun reported Thursday...The amount the executives were ordered to pay corresponded to the loss in sales suffered by the Mister Donut chain after reports of the illegal preservative use became public.

Kyodo via Crisscross: Duskin to become top shareholder in operator of Domino's Pizza chain
Duskin Co, operator of the Mister Donut fast food restaurant chain, said Tuesday it will become the biggest shareholder in Higa Industries by acquiring 44% of outstanding shares in the operator in Japan of the Domino's Pizza home-delivery pizza chain, effective Wednesday. Duskin declined to disclose the acquisition price. It will send an official to the Higa board for joint operation of the Domino's Pizza chain, while also intending to begin home delivery of foods to senior citizens by utilizing Higa's business know-how. Higa acquired the exclusive franchise rights in Japan from Domino's Pizza of the United States in 1985 and became the first to introduce a home-delivery pizza chain in this country.
