A bronze statue of a Dutch doctor known as the father of Ueno Park in Tokyo has been rebuilt through a fund-raising campaign headed by a priest in Osaka because the statue had mistakenly depicted the likeness of the doctor's younger brother. Anthonius Franciscus Bauduin, a military doctor, stayed in Japan between the end of the Edo period and the early Meiji era. A statue in his honor was erected in the park over 30 years ago, but it erroneously had the face of his younger brother who served as a consul of the Netherlands based in Japan. In 1973, the statue was erected west of a plaza encompassing a fountain in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the park by the Dutch Embassy in Tokyo and others. However, in 1984, a researcher discovered the statue's face depicted the doctor's brother, A.J. Bauduin, from its full beard, which the doctor did not have but his brother did.
