they were also forbidden from actually shooting and had to be guarded by UN forces. the security alliance bill between the u.s. and japan continues to amaze in it's stupidity.

They were allowed to shoot, but nobody gave them any bullets!

Japan's consitution still hasn't been ratified to allow that. I'm sure in defence they could probably shoot back, but I'd imagine the js in Iraq were primarily there for logistical and other types of support. They were not allowed a combat roll and were under un guard.

That is not addressed in the consitution in the slightest. The famous article #9, refers to Japan "renouncing" the right to wage war. No where does it state anything to the effect that one would be unable to defend ones self, or unit in Iraq or any other location the JSDF might be sent for an aid or support missions.

The dingalings have and continue to claim that everything regarding military from JSDF's mere existance to USFJ and the Japan US pact are "expressly illegal" under Art #9.

Yet, on the other hand they want to support the UN and feel that Japan has a manifest right to have a "ruling" seat on the Security Council!

A country with no authority to use their own military power on the council to protect the world! Will they do it with money, ie bribe radical and rioting enemies, or maybe use that famous Japanese dipolmacy? They could use Aso and "Blinky" Ishihara for pointmen!

Give me a break

GSDF Iraq troop exit came with media gag order
Japan Times
KUWAIT CITY (Kyodo) The first group of Ground Self-Defense Force troops to exit the Iraq city of Samawah, left Kuwait for Japan on Wednesday morning amid a media blackout over the withdrawal.

A chartered private aircraft carrying the roughly 200 GSDF troops left an air base in Kuwait in the morning.

The rest of the troops are expected to return home over the next week.

Approximately 600 GSDF troops moved from Samawah to Kuwait in six groups between July 7 and Monday and are undergoing health checks at a U.S. camp in Kuwait. The media were allowed to cover the arrival of the final group of GSDF troops, who were welcomed by defense chief Fukushiro Nukaga during his visit to Kuwait....more...

Now that the media is ungagged, is someone going to find out exactly what these folks did while in Iraq?

LDP race officially begins/Abe, Aso, Tanigaki tout merits for succeeding Koizumi

Image

Abe, considered to be a torchbearer of Koizumi's reform drive, said he would learn from Koizumi's decisiveness in, for example, pushing postal privatization, supporting the United States in the Iraq war and sending Ground Self-Defense Force troops to Samawah, southern Iraq.

..."It's an abnormal situation that the countries [Japan and China] can't have summit talks," Aso said. "Japan is an open country and we've been saying that we're always ready to meet [Chinese leaders]."

Abe echoed Aso's opinion. "We're saying we'll keep the door open, always," he said.

"We [Japanese, Chinese and South Korean leaders] should meet especially when we do have problems, and we should calmly deal with the situations that arise," he added. "That should be the approach taken by mature countries."
