Kyodo via Crisscross: 4 dead, 10 injured in 20-vehicle pileup on Chuo Expressway in Nagano
Four people died and at least 10 others were injured in a pileup involving 21 cars and trucks on the Chuo Expressway in Nagano Prefecture on Thursday, police and firefighters said. Of the four, a 3-year-old boy and a woman believed to be his mother died after their passenger car was crushed by trucks, while a man was found dead after being pinned underneath a truck. The accident occurred at around 1 a.m. on a curve near a parking area of the expressway in the village of Achi, police said. A large truck blocked the road in a single-vehicle accident, and the 20 following vehicles collided with the truck or each other, police said. The surface of the road was slippery due to rain at the time of the accident.
