Mad for U.S. beef, herd heads for Tokyo restaurant

Hundreds of people queued up at a central Tokyo restaurant on Monday to savor a dish not tasted for more than two years -- "beef bowl" made with U.S. meat.

Some Japanese had even camped out overnight outside a popular branch of fast-food chain Yoshinoya D&C Co. Ltd., which resumed sales of its famed specialty following the July lifting of a government ban on imports of U.S. beef.

Alright. I was there this afternoon. No, I did not camp out over night, but there was a 30 minute line and it was worth the wait. They even gave me the commemorative Tenugui hand towel with it.

Who else went to Yoshinoya's today?

The line in Ginza was about 40 deep outside the store. There was a special security guard with a sign indicating where the end of the line was. I didn't try it.

I drove down off the mountain today and in Ome on Ome kaido there is one Yoshinoya and I would guess that there were at least 100 people lined up and waiting. So much for the J-MSM's question as to whether that dangerous US beef will be accepted.

Yahoo! News Photo, Sept 18

U.S. Ambassador Thomas Schieffer gives a thumbs up as he eats a bowl of braised beef on rice or 'gyudon' at a Yoshinoya ...

It's too bad the genetically modified food lobby isn't as strong as the cattlemen lobby, or else we might see the ambassador giving a thumbs up while chomping on some US-made chewing gum.
