Think you could do with losing a few pounds

Postby Steve Bildermann » Fri May 30, 2003 3:40 pm

A large number of Japan's young women think they are fatter than they actually are, especially in larger cities, an investigation by the National Institute of Health and Nutrition has shown.

CUTE! She could get a job as a hostess here on Bashamichi, Kannai since that's the standard figure for the working ladies over 30. :?

Steve, you must see this all the time from over-training and over-exercising. I certainly do at my gym. Sometimes I'm impressed with the "dedication" they show but now I'm beginning to wonder what to say them.

Anyway... to get that above image out my head, I went and checked out the topic on the web. Dang, I never even thought about "Pro-ana" Web sites. :? After 45 minutes over surfing all these sites, tomorrow morning I may confront some of the regulars who are "over-trainers" at the gym.

Japan Times: First anorexia nervosa survey reveals 26 deaths
The nation's first anorexia nervosa study found that 26 children have died from the eating disorder and that 944 children went to hospitals last year complaining of its symptoms. Some of the patients had taken their own lives, according to the study released Tuesday. The nationwide study, conducted by the Japanese Society of Psychosomatic Pediatrics, is the first formal research here on the issue. The study drew responses from 294 of 569 pediatrician-training hospitals but did not specify the patients' age or sex.

Of the 294 hospitals, 24 said that a total of 26 children died after seeking help for weakness or heart problems. The time frame was not specified. Some of the 26 killed themselves. Of the 944 patients who sought help last year, 358 came to the hospitals for the first time and the remainder had seen doctors before. "I'm surprised to see the large number of the patients who died. We need preventive education," said University of Tsukuba professor Shinya Miyamoto, who led the research. People with anorexia nervosa have a fear of getting fat and refuse to maintain normal weight. To reduce weight, they eat less, vomit or use laxatives after eating.

Have seen a few students with anorexia but they were teens so I am wondering how they define children in the study. Most kids under the age of ten who are underweight I would venture are being starved rather then starving themselves.

On a personal note a recent bout of stomach flu has resulted in an semi-anorexic diet so I have dropped down to the weight of Robpoggi.:p
