California Sues U.S. & Japanese Car Makers

CALIFORNIA has sued six of the world's largest car manufacturers over global warming, alleging that greenhouse gases from their vehicles have caused billions of dollars in damages.

The lawsuit is the first of its kind to seek to hold manufacturers liable for damages caused by emissions from their vehicles, California's Attorney-General, Bill Lockyer, said.

. . . The Californian complaint, which one car industry group called a "nuisance" suit, named General Motors, Ford, Toyota, the US arm of Germany's DaimlerChrysler and the North American units of Honda and Nissan of Japan.

Finding the source of this tidbit has proven fruitless, but I remember reading in an old edition of The Guinness Book of World Records, that someone sued all the major US car makers in the 1970s for several trillion dollars on the grounds that they had conspired to pollute all 50 states.

Keep in mind that in the 1970s, a trillion dollars meant something, it wasn't considered "mad money" or "a fun weekend shopping in Daikanyama for t-shirts" money that it is today.
