Mainichi: 1 dead, 1 injured after festival float crashes into house
One person died and another was injured after a festival float crashed into the wall of a house here early Saturday morning, police said. At about 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, the 3.7-meter-long, 3.8-meter-high float, weighing 4 tons, crashed into the wall of a house during the Danjiri Festival in Tadaoka, local police said. Tadaoka resident Hiroshi Kobayashi, 41, died after being caught between the float he was pulling and the wall. Kenji Sonobe, 42, who was on the float, fell off and broke his left leg. None of the spectators were injured. Investigators suspect that Kobayashi and others pulling the float failed to turn the float at a "T"-junction, causing it to crash into the wall. This is the first fatal accident at the Danjiri Festival in Tadaoka, even though several accidents in which a few participants were injured have been reported in the past, local residents said.

It's been a good year in Matsuyama

Postby dimwit » Sat Oct 07, 2006 4:01 pm

This year's Matsuyama fall festival hasn't had any deaths or serious injuries for a change. But carrying things that weigh about a ton at high speed and or deliberately running into each other is generally not conducive for long lives or good health. Living in a festival town you find dichotomy between those who feel the festival is an important cultural tradition and those who dislike them for their pointless wasting of human life.

Considering that the participants tend to be a mixture of construction workers/layabouts/bosozoku/yakuza thugs I am all in favor of them smashing the hell out of each other.

Yep, they are the enablers of the lowest form of life in Japan, the construction industry.

You know, this reminds me of something I heard a long time ago, maybe there's a connection. Someone (I forget who) told me that at these festivals, sometimes they deliberately have an "accident" and ram the big omikoshi into the house of someone who didn't cough up any money for the community fund that pays for festival expenses. So once your house is smashed up, who do you end up paying to fix it up? Construction workers.

Seriously, the construction industry in Japan does a great job of speading superb Japanese living conditions. :hehe:

Likewise...And who are the biggest hazard on the road in the mornings before 8:30? White construction company vans full of criminal clowns having a yet another bad-hair day of self-hate.

I'm suprised that Japanese people who constantly suffer by the result of the industry don't shit on construction workers even more than they do now (since it's impossible to get revenge on the head of the snake).

Actually, I spoke too soon. Apparently there was one death at Matsuyama's Matsuri along with 14 serious injuries.

I saw a broken jaw bone listed at the bottom of that article, but no deaths (but I didn't have time to read the whole thing). You sure it was that bad?

Yeah, the Yomiuri is being a bit slow in reporting the story on their website, but I picked it up on 2-channel who used Yomiuri as their source.

I'm getting bokke, so I don't remeber the name of the Matsuri, but I believe it is held in conjunction with the Daijousai. They drag these huge trees to the edge of a cliff using the ceremonial ropes. They then push it over and everyone tries to ride the tree to the bottom. They kill one or two each year with that one, but great fun and a true religious experience is had by all!
