Anatomy of a Treasure Hunt: Saitama Caper Resolved!

Postby Captain Japan » Mon Feb 14, 2005 11:17 pm

This story dates to back when the FG was toast. So let's break it down one by one.
Ballplayers find some money...
Locals go on treasure hunt for cash dumped in canal
Mainichi
HASUDA, Saitama -- An additional 2 million yen has been recovered from an irrigation canal here where approximately 15 million yen was found earlier, prompting numerous local residents to search for more money, police said.

"I came here because I heard on a TV news program this morning that an additional 2 million yen was found. If I find some cash, I'm going to take the day off work," said a 38-year-old man who stopped by on his way to the office....the rest...

Nutty woman admits involvement...
Woman admits dumping 'treasure' money
Mainichi
HASUDA, Saitama -- A woman arrested for theft has admitted dumping a huge wad of cash here, leading to speculation it may have been the same money that sparked a treasure hunt here during the week, police said.

Hiromi Abe, a 25-year-old part-time worker from Saitama, was arrested Thursday for robbing her ex-lover of 60 million yen in cash that he had hidden away in a closet in his home in Ageo, Saitama Prefecture....the rest...

And the rest of the story...
Rejected tomboy reaps rich revenge and then throws it all away
Mainichi
...Eventually, some 18 million yen in cash was unearthed and, unfortunately for those who'd made a claim on the cash, it didn't take cops too long to find out how it had got there, or who it belonged to, though they struggled to believe the 25-year-old victim at first.

"We received a claim from a guy who said somebody had stolen 60 million yen in cash from him. It was an incredible sum of money for somebody of that age, so at first we thought he must have stolen it, or got it in some underhanded way. But, when he brought in his pay slips to show us, all the doubts we'd had about him flew out the door. He's the top salesman at a home refurbishment company who gets paid on commission. The 60 million yen was his savings for the three years he'd been in the job and he was definitely making the kind of money that would allow him to have that amount of cash around his home," a spokesman for the Ageo Police Station tells Shukan Gendai....the rest...

Only thing nuttier than the "nutty" girlfriend is the sub-human 'salesman' who cannot figure out how to invest his 60 million yen or put it in the bank. Sheesh.

TOKOROZAWA ― About 10 million yen in cash was found at an industrial waste disposal plant in Tokorozawa, Saitama, on Tuesday. A 42-year-old worker at the site found the money, mainly in 10,000-yen bills, in a white envelope while separating the paper and plastic waste at about 10 a.m.

The waste was brought in some time between Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

Nah, that was probably a routine LDP incentive payment that got misfiled!
