Clairvoyant Hopes To Clean Up In Court

[floatr]Image[/floatr]MDN: Sexagenarian soothsayer seething over unforeseen exposure
Kazuko Hosoki, a 68-year-old ubiquitous presence on Japanese TV screens, is apparently seething over a series of articles run by lowbrow men's weekly Shukan Gendai...Gendai's series draws on accounts of less savory aspects of Hosoki's career, including stints as a hostess and mama-san...Josei Seven says Hosoki decided to sue because Gendai, in one of its articles...accused the ornery oracle of having cozy ties with the yakuza...Writer Atsushi Mizoguchi says in the Gendai story that he was approached by a gang boss who...asked him to stop publication of another story damning of the acerbic auger...more...

I thought the name Atsushi Mizoguchi rang a bell. This story (Japanese) tells of how his salaryman son was attacked and stabbed in the leg by two Yamaguchigumi thugs back in January.

I can tolerate nearly anything on Japanese tv, but that holier-than-thou BS artist has me turning turn to great literature every time she appears. Maybe I should thank the bitch...
There is nothing more noble than impassioned nonsense.

Asahi: Writer targeted over mob stories
A nonfiction writer and specialist on the inner workings of the nation's largest organized crime syndicate is facing increased mob pressure to tone down his reports, according to sources. Gangsters are also targeting the family of Atsushi Mizoguchi, 63, in an apparent effort to keep him quiet...more...

Kyodo via Crisscross: Gangster arrested over assault on writer's son

Asahi editorial on this case:

Attack on writer's son
A journalist wrote things that displeased some people and his son was attacked in an act of revenge that was also a warning. The perpetrators of this vile and cowardly crime have been brought to justice. It all started when nonfiction writer Atsushi Mizoguchi wrote a magazine article in December 2005 about a new yakuza chief coming into power within Japan's largest crime syndicate, the Yamaguchi-gumi. Senior members of the yakuza group took umbrage with the article and demanded corrections. Mizoguchi refused, and one month later, his eldest son was stabbed in the thigh as he was strolling down a street...It is totally unacceptable for anyone to try to clamp down on freedom of speech through violence and threats. Assaulting a family member is so heinous it is beyond words...

... But the court was only able to sentence the former senior member who relayed the order and the two who actually carried out the assault. Prosecutors were unable to pinpoint the actual mastermind of the attack. The person who first gave the initial order to attack Mizoguchi's son is probably enjoying his or her freedom. The authorities must find the mastermind and bring that person to justice. Mizoguchi has said: "Unless the mastermind is caught, the person could order another attack. Terror attacks against free speech will go unchecked, and the mastermind will have achieved his purpose." In order to reveal the person who gave the order, Mizoguchi plans to take a civil case to court and sue the gang group for damages...There is no end to violence against free speech and expression. Threats against free speech are simultaneously threats against a society based on democracy. If we keep silent, this form of terrorism will grow. Crimes against free speech must be severely condemned and brought to justice every single time...more...

Whenever I read a journalist who believes he is a protector of the public morals, I am immediately seized with an urge to turn the page.
