"New gargoyles that will grace the roof above the entrance of the Sensoji treasure house in Tokyo's Asakusa district are being created in a metal shop in Kita-Hiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture. In all, 26 replacement gargoyles are being fashioned out of light yet durable titanium, rather than traditional earthenware, which is heavy and fragile."

Titanium is bloody-hell to weld in the best of conditions: welding in straight lines with the work piece laying flat on a workbench. As you can see to the picture there all sorts a nasty gaps on all those curving seams of the gargoyle.
