Man Held for Allegedly Firing Rifle at Condo that Blocks Sunlight

[floatl]Image[/floatl]A 42-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly firing his rifle at a condominium from his nearby home in Kyoto and damaging the building on three occasions last month, police said.

Akira Takai, a company employee suspected of firing the lethal weapon, was quoted as telling the police, "Less sunlight was coming in after the condo was built, but no measures were taken about it and my frustration built up."

The 11-story condominium was completed last October.

According to the police, Takai is suspected of shooting around a dozen bullets at the building about 50 meters from his home on the evenings of Feb. 15, 19 and 21, damaging external walls on the eighth to 11th floors, six aluminum railings on emergency stairs and two lights.

He turned off the lights and drew the curtains in a room on the third floor of his house before firing the rifle through a window which was about 10 centimeters open, they said.

Takai has a permit to own rifles used for shooting matches and has taken part in a preliminary round of a national competition in the past. The police came to suspect him because he has the permit.

The police began investigating the case after condominium residents reported hearing shots on Feb. 21 and raided Takai's house on March 7, seizing three rifles and around 900 bullets, they said.

"I thought that maybe we were getting pachinko balls or something like that shot at us, but I did not expect it to be a rifle," said a 41-year-old company executive living on the fourth floor of the condominium.
