Asahi: Pachinko gambit backfires in court
Building a children's park and donating it to a welfare entity may seem like an altruistic act, but the Supreme Court doesn't concur. On Tuesday, the top court ruled that such a donation in Wakkanai, Hokkaido, was illegal because the gift was actually part of a bid by local pachinko operators to block a rival chain from opening a parlor nearby. The ruling said existing businesses took advantage of a law that bars any pachinko parlor from operating near children's facilities "to protect their own business interests...The donation was intended to block a new parlor, and, as it went beyond the scope of free competition, it was illegal," said the ruling by the top court's Third Petty Bench...The suit was filed by Sapporo-based Goda Kanko Co., operator of a pachinko chain...The defendants were pachinko businesses in Wakkanai and Wakkanai Mokubakan, a social welfare organization to which the park was donated...more...
