[/floatr]Gulf News: Engineer to be deported after serving prison term
A court has stiffened the punishment against a Japanese engineer by ordering his deportation after serving one month in jail for possessing 77 adult movies. The Dubai Court of Appeal confirmed the initial verdict of one month in jail, for the 33-year-old engineer, identified as Y.K., and added the deportation order as well...The 33-year-old, who was sentenced in absentia at Dubai Court of First Instance, turned himself in and pleaded guilty before the appeal court...A number of Japanese diplomats in the UAE attended the Court of Appeal hearing. His lawyer said, "Possessing such CDs is a lawful act in Japan whose culture and traditions are different from those of the UAE. Besides, the accused who is a not a Muslim was unaware that it is unlawful and punishable by the law to possess pornographic material." The judge refused to grant him clemency and stiffened the punishment although he sought a reduced punishment. In his statement to the public prosecution, the defendant said he brought the CDs from Japan for personal use and denied they were for commercial use.
