TOKYO: Police used fishing nets and their hands on Wednesday to scoop up 2.7 million yen (US$23,000) in mysterious cash floating down a Japanese river, an official said.

A passer-by notified police after seeing bank notes drifting down the Sakai River on the border between Tokyo and Kanagawa prefecture, a Tokyo police official said on condition of anonymity. Police managed to catch 270 soggy 10,000-yen (US$85) bills, an official said.

Police are still investigating how and why the money was dumped. If the bank notes prove authentic and are not claimed in six months, it will go to the government, Kyodo News agency said.

You actually are posing a valid question here Kuro! I was watching this on TV and they had Japan's finest in the river fishing the bills out (news at eleven type broadcast). During that segment they said the police had been notified by a 911 call by a good citizen. If I am not mistaken, that qualifies under the J-Laws of found property as a finder! It would be interesting if after the prescribed period, that citizen goes to the fuzz and says "give me my dust". I think they would be hard pressed not to give him at least part of the amount as the original finder.

It works the same way if you turn in money found to the Koban. No owner, you get it after the time limit expires!

I've already called and told them that I lost my wallet flush with cash when it fell out of the pocket in my swimming suit while I was taking a dip in the river the other day, but I'll have to wait and see how that plays out!

That was right by my house too. Should leave the TV running all day so the next time they say there is cash floating down the river I can grab my mask and fins and get rich.

Didn't the Japanese just enact laws to prevent money laundering? Doesn't seem to be working.

It would seem better than snorkling for shells!
