CNN.com: Dead Whales Used in Dramatic Demo
To protest the mountains of food that go to waste in first-world countries every day, the environmental activist group Greenpeace laid 17 whale and dolphin carcasses in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
The tasty cetaceans, which Greenpeace spokesperson Greta Birkernstock claimed "could have provided nutritious meals to half the schoolchildren in Hamburg for a week," had instead gone to waste, dying on local beaches or right in fishermen's drift nets.
Birkernstock continued, "We hope that by making people aware of the tragic waste of food resources going on right in their own waters, we can encourage them to demand more efficient harvesting of these great cows of the deep."
