Denki Bran - The Taste Of Downtown Tokyo

Denki Bran was developed in 1882 by Dembe Kamiya, founder of the Kamiya Bar which is still located at it's famous 1-1-1 Asakusa address. Arranged over three floors, it claims to be the first western-style bar opened in Japan. Oenon Corp (formerly Godo Shusei) produces the liquor for general sale. The recipe is a guarded secret but it is known to contain brandy, gin, curacao and a variety of herbs. It is popularly believed that electric current is passed through the drink during the production process but this is not true. "Denki" was simply included in the name because it sounded modern at the time. With an alcohol content as high as 40%, it carries quite a kick and acquiring a taste used to be something of a rite of passage. Fans of Denki Bran recommend drinking it alongside beer or at least water to offset the rich taste.

Asahi: Writer treats visitors to 'electric' brandy and language 'skills'
If you're ever in Asakusa with time and brain cells to kill, I recommend you get clobbered on a local specialty called "denki bran." It is best served at Kamiya Bar, Asakusa 1-1-1. At up to 40-percent alcohol, the first swallows go down like medicinal paint thinner, but life soon seems balmy enough under the influence of Electric Bran(dy). It was named that in the 1880s to capitalize on the newfangled electricity craze (and not because they put an electric current through it, as some of you might have erroneously thought, um, like I did until recently). The drink's not just brandy, either; there's a "secret" blend of vermouth, curacao and herbs. And the best thing? Cheap--260 yen for a small glass, 360 yen for a bigger, stronger shot. Go ahead, drink five or 10 of them with a big beer chaser, like the other classy people in the joint...more...
