Japan tallies lowest population growth
Japan's estimated population grew 0.05 percent in the year ended Oct. 1, 2004, marking the lowest growth rate since the survey began in 1950, the government said Monday. The estimated population stood at 127,687,000 as of that day, said the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in a report. The population of men dwindled by 0.01 percent to 62.30 million, while that of women rose to 65.39 million, up 0.12 percent. The report said the decline of the male population stemmed from an outflow of men for overseas long-term business posts. The natural net increase in the population which is counted by reducing the number of deaths from the number of births also saw a record-low growth at 102,000.

Protip: Increasing your population can be done by following these steps:

(1) Give people 2 days off a week and family medical leave.
(2) Create 7 or 8 hour workdays.
(3) Just say no to sabisu zangyou.
(4) Don't force your workers to live another state/prefecture away from their
families.
(5) More daycare centers.

although these measures would probably help somewhat, and possibly increase worker morale they will not be enough.
look at other developed nations - they pretty much all have an aging population and declining birthrate and they do not have the same work culture (to the extent) as japan.
The way females are treated in the workforce is probaly going to have a much bigger effect. More and more females are delaying or putting off having children because they want careers. Something needs to be done so these women can have both. if they cant have both the oppurtunity costs need to be much less. In japan the culture of female and male career tracks needs to be quashed(although it is illegal it seems to be largely ignored)

I think Japan's trying to make it so they can only do one.. You've got to think like Japanese men; if they make careers so unappealing to women, they'll have kids instead. ;)

hehe nice try..........
unfortunatly the influx of western ideals, life, and culture has printed itself on japanese women's minds and they are not willing to be the japanese housewives anymore.............
You cant reverse the flow of information, ideals etc
Japanese men arent willing to be the sole providers and 'salarymen' anymore - you only need to look at the rising job mobility and 'freeters' trend

Maybe this is Plan B: Wakamuru

Postby Kuang_Grade » Tue Feb 22, 2005 3:35 pm

From http://popgadget.net/

http://www.sdia.or.jp/mhikobe/products/etc/wakamaru/english/index.html
First of all, we propose the following services, which are useful for an elderly person or a person who is living alone, who is health conscious or who may potentially have concerns over health, through "wakamaru" connected to the Internet. In future, more service providers will be invited to improve the service.

Keeping the house while the family is absent

You can operate "wakamaru" to view the internal image of a house away from home using a mobile phone or personal computer connected to the Internet when "wakamaru" is in the housekeeping mode.

"wakamaru"can report to the specified address if it detects a big sound in the vicinity of the robot or if it detects a moving object.

Watch out service and reporting unusual cases

The type, time and location of your contact with "wakamaru" (greeting, conversation, housekeeping, emails, etc.) can be reported to the specified address.

"wakamaru" looks for you in the following cases:

If no contact (conversation or touch) is made for a certain period of time.

If there is a wide difference between the daily life schedule and the contact (you do not enter the dining room at the usual time in the morning, or do not go out of home as scheduled).

If there is no end signal (word or touch) from the owner after the time of taking a bath, going to a rest room, going out or going to bed is informed to "wakamaru ",
If it cannot find you or if no response is returned from you when it talks to you, then it finds unusual cases and alerts in a loud voice and if it is not stopped within the specified time, it send emails to the specified address.

Health care

Based on your daily life schedule, "wakamaru" speaks to you, for example, "Have you taken the medicine?" when the time comes to take periodical medicines or to use the vital equipment.

It asks questions on the health of the owner (such as "Have you slept well?", "Did you enjoy your meal?") and sends the information to the specified address by email.

It sends the information related to health to a health care center and receives advice on the health (optional service).
The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

Mitsubishi Heavy to rent out robot
Asahi
They dutifully follow orders, never get tired and will not complain about working conditions or the decisions of their bosses. But even robots these days are having a tough time landing full-time positions.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., after finding few buyers of its Wakamaru robot, has begun a "temp staff" service to rent out the humanoids to companies and hospitals.

The Wakamaru was introduced in April 2003 and gained popularity at the World Expo in Aichi Prefecture in 2005. The robot can relay information verbally and provide some services, such as managing schedules and sending emergency alerts to cellphone users.

The Wakamaru will escort visitors to the locations they choose on a touch-panel screen set up at the companies and hospitals that rent out the robot.

The 1-meter-tall robot can also make simple conversation and play paper-scissors-stone. MHI officials also want to rent out the robots for special events....more...

Is that an offer? I don't know how I missed this post earlier. It's probably because being a Kiwi round eye, who just rides the trains around in circles for entertainment, you are not listed on my hunting license.

Well, Bird you may be right there, however, she is a Kiwi and Kiwis only go out at night! But, then again she may not be reliablel. I held on to some stuff that she wanted for her place in Yokohama for a while and she never came to pick it up (45 minutes by train is a long way to a Kiwi). Actually, I didn't really keep it for her for very long by Kiwi standards, only a year and a half!

If she doesn't show up at my doorstep in August when she returns to the land of the rising sun, I just might be tempted to politely kick her ass up between her shoulder blades this time (just purely for the fun of it of course) and then make her shout at the pub.

Get the hint IPG?

They can give people all the time off they want, and all the workplace benefits and pay they want and the birth rate will still not rise unless they do something about japanese women becoming uninterested in sex at a fairly young age. the whole "sexless fufu" phenomenon has less to do with work life and more to do with a nationwide hormonal imbalance or something!

view from inaka

Postby james » Fri Jun 22, 2007 2:01 pm

you can almost feel the emptying out of inaka. few children, many, many old people, such that even at 32 i feel like i am in one of the youngest age brackets here. maybe because i am. the only time i feel old is when school is out.

when i first came here 11 years ago, the population of this town was around 9200 people. it's now at around 7950 and still dropping. 10% of the population is 80 and over (several centenarians).

birthrates though are well above the national average i think. almost all of the families around me have at least two kids, most in fact have 3 and several even 4. however, most if not all of them leave and i can't say that i blame them. some come back to raise a family but there is a huge gap of 20-somethings missing.

as for the whole issue of number of kids, i wonder if maybe unaffordable crap housing has anything to do with it. if i were living in a small cramped apartment, the last thing i'd want is to make it even more so.

Actually, you might be on to something GG.

Men and women ARE indeed wired different.
Maybe Japanese guys need lessons on how to be romantic and get into a woman's head, not just her pantsu.

Romance - sheez - you think that is all girls want??

You know that sometimes a girl wants a guy who knows how to fuck well with a partner and not just to be able to masturbate with another person present.

You misunderstand me. When I say get into a woman's head, I mean seriously understand and try to get into their heads and find out what makes that particular woman tick. And then make love to her mind as well as her body because the truth is that a woman's emotional balance greatly impacts her ability to enjoy sex. A man who understands his woman's needs and tries to satisfy her needs OUTSIDE of the bed before he even gets her into bed will please her far better IN the bed than he would if he concentrated solely on putting in work in the bedroom.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.
