Kyodo via JapanToday: American English teacher arrested for beating up taxi driver after refusing to pay fare
Police said Wednesday that a male English teacher was arrested for beating up a taxi driver and not paying the cab fare on July 1. The teacher, identified as Timothy Wilson, 49, from the U.S., was charged with assault. According to police, Wilson got into the taxi in Minato Ward and then refused to pay the 2,400 yen cab fare and allegedly punched the 49-year-old taxi driver in the face several times in Setagaya Ward. The taxi driver chased Wilson who fled the scene, and called police even though he was injured. Wilson has admitted to the allegations, police said.

A 49 year old English teacher sounds like he's probably been in Japan a while. Unless he's a professional arsehole, which is possible, he must have been having a very bad day. And it just got a lot worse.

If he's 49, punches a cabbie, while trying to beat the fare, they should file the mother and move on. Waste of time. Give him to Takechan for a bookmark!

Unless it involved somebody dying, I can't imagine how bad a day he had to drive him to try and cheat a taxi...
I (unfortunately) know people who have been here for longer than me and still regularly try to cheat the trains too...

Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

It sounds to me like he was arrested on July 1st and spent a week and a half in detention until he "admitted to the allegations" on July 12th, when he then was released.
