Yeah, it's going to f*ck up my island weekend. :(
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again

Wey hey hey, here she comes
She comes in colors
You know she gonna turn the daylight on
'cause I love the way you talk to me
And I love the way you walk on me
And I need you more
Oh, than you need me

Gee, I would enjoy the view from your hillside of the typhoon pounding shore below. Typhoons bring needed chaos to regimented Japanese life.Image

If it is the weekend I won't be annoyed. Just as long as it does screw up my schedule next week.

The cottage shakes like hell in the wind though, not a fun place to be.

Typhoons also tend to make outdoor BBQing futile, and I don't want to end up in the Suicide Party Cars thread from trying to do it inside. ;)

The biggest problem though is that the sea gets so churned up that you can't get on or off the island for a day or two after a typhoon passes.

Gee, back in my zombie-salaryman days, I loved getting "stuck" by a typhoon since any employee in a major Japanese company can collect full wages for lost time at work because severe weather stops public transportation.

I'm a soon-to-be-ex-zombie. :D Missing a few days of work would not bother me in the least. It's just not a good place to ride out a typhoon.

don't forget your umbrella and do keep in mind that the best views of a typhoon can be had near shorelines, on rooftops and while playing near rivers and dams.

I also suggest surfing or a small craft fishing trip.

My company is following the US Military TCCOR gauging system. We just reached TCCOR 1C. Looks like I get to stay in bed tomorrow.

You can keep up to date on the Okinawa TCCOR Staus here:

I use the http://typhoon2000.com website, but there are lotsa good ones out there...

And we have the first winner of the day. According to NHK some 48 year old guy was injuried in Okinawa falling off his roof.

BTW you forget to mention travelling around in the mountainsides.

Okay, I have a basic typhoon question. I've been watching for years, and it seems like the typical storm track is about like the projected track for this one: wandering northwest, then it hits Okinawa and takes a northeast turn and goes straight up the Japanese coastline. Is there some meteorological reason for this? Or is my observation incorrect?

You obervation is correct. Trade winds which dominate between the tropics and 20 to 25 degrees north push the weather patterns westward. North of 30 degrees and westerlies push weather pattern to the east.

Man Oyaji, that's no weather to be at home or out in. You better head for the pub to weather the storm!
