[/floatr]Around 9:30 on Friday evening, a man entered the Gourmet City supermarket near Hatagaya station in Tokyo and began to shoplift some items, putting them directly into his bag. He was noticed by other customers and a man asked him what has doing. According to eyewitnesses, he then returned some of the items to the shelves and ran out of the shop. The customer gave chase, shouting "thief" and caught up with him at one point. The man got away, crossed the road and the chase continued. Around 100 metres from the shop the customer again caught up with the man who then reached inside the bag and suddenly stabbed himself in the left breast with what police are describing as a fruit knife. He had no ID or mobile phone but was said to be in his 50s and the value of the stolen items - including bread and onigiri - amounted to around 1,000 yen. An ambulance was called but he died from loss of blood on the way to the hospital. (Japanese Asahi article here)
