Away from the Krispy Kreme frenzy, another foreign import seems to be making more of an effort to break into the Japanese market. Egg tarts from Lord Stow's Bakery first appeared in Osaka seven years ago. The company's Japanese site advertises a total to date of only eight shops, still mainly in the Kansai area. The founder of the bakery, Essex boy Andrew Stow, started his business in Macau. The Wiki entry for egg tarts says:
"Stow modified the recipe of pastel de nata using techniques of making English custard tarts. It has since become available at numerous bakeries, as well as Macau-style restaurants and Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwan branches of the KFC restaurant chain. There was a craze in Singapore and the Republic of China in the late 1990s"
"Andrew's Egg Tarts" is now running major promotions in prime Kanto sites such as Narita Airport and Shinjuku Station. The company's web site still features the founder proudly holding a tray of his creations. Sadly, though, he is no longer around to see whether Japan takes to them as readily as Chinese populations. Andrew Stow died in Macau three months ago, of natural causes, at the early age of 51.
