Andrew's Egg Tarts

Away from the Krispy Kreme frenzy, another foreign import seems to be making more of an effort to break into the Japanese market. Egg tarts from Lord Stow's Bakery first appeared in Osaka seven years ago. The company's Japanese site advertises a total to date of only eight shops, still mainly in the Kansai area. The founder of the bakery, Essex boy Andrew Stow, started his business in Macau. The Wiki entry for egg tarts says:

"Stow modified the recipe of pastel de nata using techniques of making English custard tarts. It has since become available at numerous bakeries, as well as Macau-style restaurants and Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwan branches of the KFC restaurant chain. There was a craze in Singapore and the Republic of China in the late 1990s"

"Andrew's Egg Tarts" is now running major promotions in prime Kanto sites such as Narita Airport and Shinjuku Station. The company's web site still features the founder proudly holding a tray of his creations. Sadly, though, he is no longer around to see whether Japan takes to them as readily as Chinese populations. Andrew Stow died in Macau three months ago, of natural causes, at the early age of 51.

Custard Tart

Postby tidbits » Thu Jan 11, 2007 12:12 am

I love custard tart (Dad used to bake it)! There was a small bakery shop at Abiko where I used to live sells very nice custard tart, unfortunately it has closed down. Ever since I have been looking for custard tart in all the bakery shops that I step in but not quite sucessfull. Tried once the egg tart in China Town Yokohama but didn't taste good. I also found Andrew's egg tart at Narita but I don't like that flaky outer part (Portuguese style). If anyone finds good custard tart in Tokyo pls do let me know.

I found them Tina!! In Shinjuku Station. Hard to describe the place though.

If you head towards the Keio New Line/Oedo line entrance - between the South and the West Exits. I think it is called FoodStreet or something like that. If you go down the escalators from the Lumine Building side (Between South and West Exits) there is an entrance to the food court just before you get to the Keio Line Entrance. There is a bakery there that has two types of egg custard tarts. They are fab!!!

I do love them too especially after a trip to Hong Kong a few years ago.

Thanks a million GG and Mulboyne. You people are amazing! Glad that I posted that message. I have been searching for shops that sell egg tart on the net (for years!) but never find anything. Will drop by that shop very soon!

YES!! That is the place!!

They have two types of tarts - one with the flaky pastry and one with more of a shortcrust pastry. They make hundreds of them everyday and you can buy them individually or in take home packs. Great way to get a sugar hit after a day of shopping in Shinjuku. We buy one each as we head down to the Oedo line to get home.

Mulby - you are the best!!
