Suicide Prevention T-Shirts

The Jisatsu Zero Campaign organized a rally around Tokyo yesterday where supporters all wore white T-shirts with positive messages designed to discourage people from taking their own lives. The T-shirts are supposed to be available via the website but it seems to be under construction. Japanese report on the event here.

OMG - so that was the group of wierdos walking through Yoyogi park yesterday. I thought they were a cult christian group "spreading the word". They were following the leader carrying a smiley face on a stick and breaking off to shake hands at park revellers and smiling like they were on MDMA. They were altogether too cheery!! Prozac-much?

I wondered what they were trying to sell.

I'm curious as to who in Japan thought such a rally would make a difference. A nice gesture, I guess, but hollow nonetheless since college-aged kids aren't at particular risk for suicide.

Based on some papers I've translated over the last year or so, the fastest-growing suicide population is elderly women. The second largest suicide population, and previously the front runner, is middle-aged men. Worse, both groups are only projected to expand as the aging of Japanese society proceeds. So can someone explain how twentysomethings in T-shirts are related to either?

In Ireland (and UK) the highest suicide-rate are young men (late teens/early 20s).
I'm surprised to hear that elderly ladies are the highest in Japan now, I would've thought it would still be their husbands, as females are generally a lot less inclined to self-destruct than men

Incedentally, "Up to at least the 1950s, it was the Republic of Ireland which had the lowest suicide rate in the world" possibly because we used to 'have {catholic} religion' & why the Latin American countries still do.

They're not altogether correct on that Soc! Gogatsubyou still gets alot of college kids each year. Although it may not be a the levels of the past.

I can certainly support this kind of movement, and it's important that the stigma of mental illness and depression be taken away - but why oh why do t-shirts for good causes always have to look so bad?

Why dont they just stand in front of a train station like the school begging groups do, hold a banner and should dont kill yourself. Or they could hire one of those election trucks and drive through the streets blasting out anti suicide slogans.

Maybe they should start by dealing with the repressed domestic violence, bullying and oh, of course, the real reason Japanese love suicide --- it's the final solution in conflict resolution. Besides, anyone knows, suicide is painless, honorable and that really isn't true about JR bill.
