Man sprays tear gas on train after row with another passenger
Image
YOKOHAMA -- Some 19 people were injured when a passenger on a JR Tokaido Line train sprayed tear gas in a carriage on Wednesday night after getting into an argument with another man, police said.

The Caucasian passenger had blond hair and was wearing black jeans. He was about 180 centimeters tall.

Twelve men and five women underwent treatment at a hospital after suffering sore eyes and throats. Their condition is not serious.

Kanagawa police are searching for the man, who fled the train at Yokohama Station, on charges of inflicting injuries. (Mainichi)

I doubt he actually had tear gas (CS/CN/CR) - more likely it was just a small keychain aerosol of pepper spray (OC). Since you can buy those in shops around Tokyo fairly easily I'm surprised something like this hasn't happened sooner.

OC is a bit weaker than actual tear gas, but it's still good enough to clear an enclosed space like a train car. I remember once at university someone played a prank on the dorm floor beneath mine by spraying a small can of pepper spray on every door of the entire floor (this was back in Chicago in the mid-90's so there was no "counter terrorist response" as they would probably have today) and they ended up having to evacuate it. I had a friend at the time who was an enlisted Marine noncom and lived on the floor -he had a hunch who did it. He plotted revenge using some actual CS pellets (the same kind used in boot camp in the "gas chamber") he had in his possession, but he thought better of it and decided to let it slide...

Oh boy, here we go again. Cant wait to tune into the wide shows this morning to see the extent of the hysteria that will inevitably be whipped up over this one. I wonder how many weeks it will take for someone in the media to point out, as has been done above, that pepper sprays are available for purchase domestically etc...:shake:

If that was the case, surely there'd be sirens and public address system warnings to "extinguish all naked flames", etc.

I thought this was funny as hell when I saw it on the news the other day. The headlines always read, "Foreigner attacks......" and when they interviewed passengers, they were always saying, "A FOREIGNER came up...". Who gives a fuck---why couldn't they just say, "A man...." or "A male.." I guarantee if this were not some FG it would not have even been brought up.

What a dumbass though, regardless of who it was. Watch--they end up arresting the poor chump and find out it was a can of Axe deoderant spray.

Don't worry FG's, he was blond. This story won't even make it to the weekend.

Actually Takechanpoo is right. Everyone has to have their freak out, bursting point in Japan. This guy just chose to loose it on a train and unfortunately had some spray with him (Axe or pepper spray...same effect...).

Shit, doesn't everyone have a story about themselves or a friend? ...I had a buddy back in the early 90's who was forced over the sanity line down in Fukuoka. He was a wee bit heavy and the video rental clerk starting commenting to a collegue about his heavy weight thinking he didn't understand. Being that it was about the 20th time he had heard such a thing over the years, he couldn't hold his tongue and finally lost it. He picked up the cash register, smashed it to the floor (sending money and electronics everywhere) and chased the girl around the store swearing at her as only a very fluent Japanese speaking Australian would dare.
Of course it ended up he had to due a big public gomen nasai and pay for damages and extra apology yen, but the poor guy just hit the breaking point.

I'm glad no one got hurt on the train, but it is a pretty good story for the blonde guy to tell his friends years later. :-P

I like the Axe body soaps, can't get them here yet. Good lather, conditions the skin without feeling that greasy residue like when you use tear gas. Shit, how many blonde FGs are dying their hair black tonight?

I used to live in Hiroshima 8 years ago and I had a friend that was very easy to let`s say....get riled up. I cannot recall the countless times, he would get into an altercation with people, once he had an argument with his wife at a restaurant and threw a table and sent all the customers scurrying away.
On another occasion, he physically got into a fight(I mean, full brawl)with 7 police officers and confronting Yakuza that would talk smack to him or get into his way....
In the end, I had to move and get away from the guy, he was giving me and FG's a serious bad name in that city. But I agree, sometimes these fools don`t realize that their actions are making it worse for all foreigners, it just reinforces the xenophobia that so many Japanese have about us.
When I think back on all that had happened to him and his crazy outbursts, it was amazing that he never got arrested or worse deported. Had he done the same thing in the states, no doubt, he would have caught a bullet.

Owwwww, I dont know people. Sometimes I think a (non-violent) blowout is actually quite healthy from time to time. I'm a pretty easy going bloke, and by no means a thug. But occasionally I will get into the "fuck this shit zone". Now I certainly dont go looking for trouble, but then when someone decides that they are going to be the "one" and act like the only reason I'm in Japan is to provide them with free entertainment, I'll give them a nice big verbal spray. It might be a couple of eyebrow-shaved wankers hanging outside Lawsons, it could be a slightly pissed saleryman on the train wanting to play that pathetic staredown game, it might be a cop asking to see my FG card, whatever. I find that the dressing down I give 'em is kind of therapeutic. A release mechanism if you will. A coping strategy. Of course, I probably look like a dickhead to most people when I'm doing it, and I am sure many on this board will be thinking that I have a psychotic illness, but I dont care. Im just being honest. Its a once every 6 months kind of thing. And to do the gaman gaman thing, to take shit from smart arses forever, just because you consider yourself to be a 'guest', is like being a ticking timebomb. I prefer to stay in damage control.
Anyway, thats what I recon.

The joys of being a VERY LARGE gaijin.

In my 8 years in Japan, I never got asked for anything.

Then again, I DID live near a large military facility. Well, maybe an hour away.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

I completely understand where you are at. There are some days when the same thing being said/done to you is easily brushed aside, and there are other days when it sets you off. Sometimes you chase down the shitsucker walking in the opposite direction, who threw an elbow into you, sometimes you don't. A few times, I've been lucky enough to see shitsucker coming and was able to give it much worse to shitsucker. I figure at that point it's best to come off completely psychotic and generally turn around and start screaming, "Yeah! yeah, I want more, give me more!" at shitsucker.
Afterwards, I tend to feel better for about 5-7 months depending on the weather and the exchange rate.
